Notes: The studio was a bit crowded tonight because a few friends had stopped by. Colorado's best concertina player Jerry C stopped in to say hello. Then Doc Martin took a seat and added his two cents to the show. In between all that "DJ gone pro" Danny of KCUV paid a short visit and reminded us that there's always hope a decent gig will turn up.

The show progressed as the visiting went on. Uncle Jeff admitted his philosophy is somewhat based on the TV series Bonanza. "You could learn about every facet of family life on that show," Jeff claimed. I shook my head and wondered where on earth he came up with that. My guess in a truck traveling eighty across Nebraska.

It was obvious another trip to Eric's music cache had netted some new tunes plus Doc kept pulling musical diamonds out of his black bag. Uncle Jeff's eyes would get big as he turned and spoke to Doc, "I didn't know you had that tune," or "Where did that one come from?" Jeff was especially interested in Harmonica Frank's, Rockin' Chair Daddy (Sun Label) and Little Red Bird by Gillian Welch.

My brain went woosh as I listened to the masterful lap-steel of Gleason Street. The comforting hollow vocals layered behind the music had me drifting in my own mind. I must get a copy of that tune or I will go more nuts than I am. Another favorite was the slide guitar and old fashion fiddlin' rock-a-billy beat of Jim DeNoone's, E Ramble. Touches of Vaudeville are good for the soul.

At one point during a break Jeff insisted on restarting the background music because it had not qued up quite right... the show did a sort of belch and everyone laughed in a weird kid way. It was so natural no one noticed what had happened. I was amused.

Doc had one more elixir, circa 1917, in his bag... M.J. O'Connell's, I Feel At Home If They Just Let Me Join The Army. This old tune must have been recorded on wax.

The show wrapped up with a token surf trak, some nice pedal steel in the Hilo March and a Rutles ramp up to Bob's Garage Show. The evening was a blast and adult drinks at Tom's Tavern were not far off. See you next week...

Shows to see Drive-By Truckers, Feb 18 at the Bluebird, Asylum Street Spankers Feb 27 at the Trilogy Wine Bar with Ukulele Loki, The Crispy Canival Family Spectacular and the Nogoodniks. Buckskin Stallion - 'Blue Ribbon Buzz' CD release party at the Boulder Theater on Feb 26. Richmond Fontaine will be at the Larimer Lounge March 5th.
